Joining the Sherman Volunteer Fire Department

The Sherman Volunteer Fire Department has many opportunities for individuals to volunteer their time and talent. An important thing to remember is that there is a lot more to the fire department that just waking up at 3:00 in the morning and fighting fires. The department is always in need of individuals to help out with the operation and maintenance of the fire house as well as fundraising and administrative tasks in addition to firefighting and EMS personnel.

Of course if you are interested in being a firefighter, EMT or EMR then we would welcome you as well. We're always in need of more trained personnel to respond to calls, especially those who are available during the work day when many of our current members are working outside of Sherman.

Another thing to remember is that not everyone is expected to make every call. Joining the department is not a commitment to be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We realize that this is a volunteer organization and that everyone has other commitments. For regular active members we track attendance and meetings on a four month cycle. During any given cycle, we expect members who wish to remain active to make six of the Monday night drill meetings which generally run from 7:00pm until 9:00pm or so as well as two of the monthly meetings which are the second Thursday of the month from 7:30 until 9:30.

If you are interested in joining us you can call the firehouse at (860) 354-9273 or fill out the Membership Application and someone from the membership committee will be in touch with you.
